Practice Test 4 - Question commentary
Instructions
You are travelling along a two-way road in a 50km/hour speed zone.
Click the 'REACT' button when you would slow down.
Setting
You are moving along a suburban street. As the clip progresses you can see a vehicle parked on the left hand side of the street has its brake lights on. As you come closer to the vehicle you can see someone exit from the passenger side of the vehicle and then the driver’s door opens and the driver exits the vehicle.
Response
The margin for error on this question is quite large. The correct answer is to respond as soon as you see the vehicle has its brake lights on. Alternatively you could wait until you see the passenger exit the vehicle. You should not wait for the driver to open their door, as this is far too late to act in a real situation.
Instructions
You are stopped.
You wish to turn right at the intersection.
Click the 'REACT' button when it would be safe to go.
Setting
You want to turn right at a set of traffic lights that control a busy intersection. You do not have a dedicated green arrow and must wait for a safe break in traffic to make the turn. Three oncoming vehicles wish to turn in front of you and two other oncoming vehicles pass straight through the intersection.
Response
While the vehicles are making their turns you cannot proceed, as you do not have sufficient visibility to ensure the turn will be safe. When they have made their turns and the last oncoming vehicle passes through the intersection, the turn can be made safely and you should respond.
Instructions
You are travelling along a two-way road in a 50km/hour speed zone.
Click the 'REACT' button when you would slow down.
Setting
You are travelling at 50km/h along a suburban street. Eventually a red car appears as it quickly approaches an intersection from a side street to join or pass through the street you’re on. This vehicle proceeds into the street and cuts you off as it attempts to go straight through the intersection.
Response
The correct answer is to respond as soon as you see the vehicle approaching from the side street (when it appears behind the truck). An alternative is to respond when the vehicle begins to proceed into the intersection when it should not. However, in a real life situation this may be too late.
Instructions
You are stopped.
You wish to turn right at the intersection.
Click the 'REACT' button when it would be safe to go.
Setting
You are waiting to turn right across oncoming traffic. There are a number of oncoming vehicles and you must respond when it is safe to make the turn.
Response
This question frustrates many users as it is easy to disagree with the answer. The correct response is no response. This is what you must do to allow the test to continue.
The first possible response is after the first three vehicles pass you. There is only just enough time to make the turn and here this is regarded as not enough time.
The second possibility is after the fourth vehicle has passed. Although the gap to the remaining oncoming traffic appears sufficient, the next vehicle is both speeding and completing an illegal overtake. In this situation it is too risky to make the turn based on the actions of the other driver.
Instructions
You are travelling along a two-way road in a 50km/hour speed zone.
Click the 'REACT' button when you would slow down.
Setting
You are travelling at 50km/h along a suburban street. Eventually the street bends to right.
Response
The correct answer is to respond when you notice you are coming up to a bend and will need to slow down.
Instructions
You are travelling along a two-way road in a 80km/hour speed zone.
Click the 'REACT' button when you would slow down.
Setting
You are travelling at 70km/h in a tunnel with your windscreen wipers on. There are two lanes travelling in the same direction and you are positioned in the right lane. You are following behind one vehicle and there is a small bus in the left lane that is also in front of you. As the clip progresses a gap opens in front of you and the bus indicates its intention to move into your lane before proceeding to do so.
Response
The correct answer is to respond when the bus indicates its intention to move into your lane.
Instructions
You are travelling along a two-way road in a 50km/hour speed zone.
You want to keep driving straight ahead.
Click the 'REACT' button when you would slow down.
Setting
You are travelling at 50km/h along a main street at night. As the clip progresses two cyclists become visible in front of you.
Response
The correct answer is to respond when you notice the cyclists in front of you, as you will have to slow down.
